Umngazi River Bungalows & Spa
Positives:Everything is included once you get there - just take off your shoes and relax!
Umngazi River Bungalows & Spa consists of individual Pondo style thatched huts built on the banks of the Umngazi river mouth. The indigenous vegetation is lush and tropical – the horizon is a scenic maze of rolling green hills.
Umngazi River Bungalows and spa is on the road that leads from Mthatha to Port St Johns, winding through lush valleys and deep gorges with majestic rocky outcrops. Brightly coloured thatched Pondo huts cling precariously to the rolling green hills that form this rural landscape.
25kms From Port St Johns a signpost leads the way to Umngazi River Bungalows. The road gently meanders around the foothills of green hills, valleys and local villages. Graceful Nguni cattle wander slowly across the road and occasionally take a nap in the middle of the road – ensuring that passing motorists adhere to the speed limit in a uniquely African style. 2kms before the resort the signpost directing visitors to the entrance reads “time to take off your shoes…”
British soldiers discovered the site of the Umngazi River bungalows in 1841 and established a fresh water station. The legendary Dick King stopped there to water his horse on his epic 1000 km ride from Durban to Grahamstown to warn the garrison that Port Natal was under siege. In 1929 a trading post was established and in 1931 three rudimentary huts were built for holidaymakers. Those three humble huts marked the beginning of what was to become one of South Africa’s premier family holiday resorts and award winning spa.
